Happy Mother's Day to all of us!

May 8th, 2009

What a week this has been.  Finished my three week Granny job with little Justin. This has caused me to reflect a lot about Moms and all they do.  Now I can consider myself to be a retired Mom who only responds when called to action, or when a volunteer position arises.

But I have to say at this point in life the ones who deserve the glory are my daughters.  They are the ones who are changing diapers, burping, wiping messes, functioning on little sleep and they are just at the beginning of this journey.  A journey that won't end for a long time.  There will be days when they will feel invisible, unloved, perhaps overlooked in the scheme of life as so much now is about the babies.  As these children grow they will still be the focus and in the supporting roll is the Mom.   Like the person who holds the ladder, never getting as much praise as the one who fixes the light.

These girls also have jobs, husbands, and parents to spread their attention.  Their first role in life was as our daughters, and they did that outstandingly.  Not to say there was never a challenge, but there was so much pride and joy as there continues to be on a daily basis.   They are hard working, responsible and loyal employees to their jobs.  And those traits carry over into their marriages as well.  They choose wonderful, hardworking men for husbands, who in turn have grown into great Dads for these precious grandchildren of ours.  They help out when they can, knowing that many hands lightens the load.   Our family has been through a lot, but we have traveled it together.

So my darling daughters, now the job comes down to raising loving, thoughtful, respectful children who will continue to go out into the world and make it a better place.  It isn't always easy, but it is worth it.  Follow your heart, let your common sense come through in your decisions.  Know that you won't always be loved for what you do or the parenting choices that you make, but always, always do what you feel is right.  Instinct and intuition will help you along the way.  And of course, I will be there to help if I can.  I love you both so much.

So on this Mother's Day, my heart goes to the Moms who are in active service.  Your rewards come in the grins and giggles of your little ones and the joy and gratitude of your parents.

And to my Mom, many thanks and much appreciation for the years of giving.  It does not go forgotten.  I know that you are still there willing to help at anytime.

April Showers

Well, this has been an interesting week.  I spent three days with my grandson Justin.  It has been a very long time since I spent that much time with a baby, and I know why children are given to the young people.  He was very good, and of course as sweet as sugar.    Now you may know that there are two boys, Justin is three months old and belongs to Jennifer and Zach, and then there is Collin, who is six months old and belongs to Janelle and Brennan.   They are very fun and growing so quickly.  Makes me feel old.

The shop was very busy this week and we are so thankful to all of you who helped us find more space in the shop.  Now comes the big news.  Years ago I was privileged to meet Lori McKenna.  A woman of strength, enthusiasm, a zest for life.  Lori taught me that if you could do whatever you put your mind to.  She is full of ideas and creativity that I am sure to have just scratched the surface.  Now, back to my point.  Lori gave me the promotion of "April Showers Bring May Fabric Sales".  So with that bit of inspiration, we once again present our May Fabric Sale, which this year means that everything in the shop under $9.99 a yard will be $3.50 for a half yard cut, and $6.00 for a full yard or more.  This is May 1, 2 & 3rd only.  I know this is huge and crazy, but we are hoping that it will be fun as well.  Sorry, but at the sale price we won't be cutting anything less than a half yard.  So the more you buy, the more you save.  Many thanks to Lori.  She has moved away, but is never far from my soul.

So last week I showed you my paper piecing stars that I have started.  Well here is a picture of the honeycomb quilt that I am doing with all Fig Tree fabrics.  It will consist of "Five Years of Figs".  This means that I have two  more groups to arrive before I can really finish it, but I do love the scrappy look, the colors of these fabrics are so warm and rich, it has been a blast to work on.

I have a good friend Sally (we were sister's in another life) who takes the most beautiful pictures and shares them with me, which is inspiring me to take more pictures.  Here are ones that I love so much of a sunrise from her home and a sunset from our last trip to the beach.

Our shop hop fabric arrived at the shop this week, and hard to believe that it is just eight weeks away.  So much to do to get ready.  Besides all the fun quilting projects there is a chunk of yard work to do, but with the weather we really only have to deal with that one or two days a week.  Here's to more sunshine so there can be afternoons spent on the deck stitching away.

Hope to see you in the shop soon.

Springtime

With spring always come a new energy level for me, and while I would of course rather be quilting, this is a wake up time for the farm.  Our whole world goes into high speed for several months to come.  The days are of course more filled with daylight, which means more hours to work.  And if you think having a garden is work, try farming a thousand acres!  So everyone get ready to eat your veggies, peas, corn, and green beans hopefully will abound.  Dan and I recently took a day trip to Warrington, Oregon to pick up our silage bags, they are 8 feet square and a 150 feet long, which we fill three of them to feed our cows during the winter.  It was nice to get away (even if only for a few hours) and we saw some beautiful scenery.

We also have the chicken house full of new babies of all varieties.  It is funny to go to the Farm Store and be asked what kind of chicken I want.  Well, my answer is always "pretty, colorful ones".  These chickens are only required to entertain me, eat a bug now and then,  and provide an occasional egg.  But baby chicks are a sure sign of spring here on the farm as well as plowed fields.

Enough farming.... my quilting is exploding as well.  When you work with Laurie, you get so enthused about everything that you come home with way too many projects.  But, I am at a standstill with  one of the paper piecing projects until a new line of fabric shows up, and so what is the answer to that situation, well you start two more project right?  I so love the English paper piecing because I can take it with me, watch TV, be talking on the phone all the while getting something done.  So if you like one project you may as well have two going at the same time so that you don't get bored right?
Here is the beginnings of one of them that is hopefully going to grow daily.  We have so much new fabric coming in the shop these days that one can barely keep up, but I am going to give it a whirl.  Lots of new batiks and flannels this week, and more to come!

Oh, and just one more story to end today's blather....I want you all to meet Bear.  Bear is a wonderful cat that as a kitten was thrown out of a car window into the road, left to him own abilities.  Fortunately, my daughter Janelle found him and brought him to live here on the farm.  Our thought was that he would enjoy the barn, but Bear had other ideas as he adopted us and moved on into the house.  He is  a truly beautiful cat who certainly deserved better than the start that he was given.  Please spay and neuter your animals, treat them with the respect they deserve as they give unconditional love.

Happy spring and happy quilting.....

Early morning

Greetings everyone,

It is 5:30 in the morning on Sept. 9th 2008.  When I woke up this morning it came to me that we were in the midst of an extraordinary Indian Summer.  These last few days of clear sunny days and starry nights have just made me feel alive again after our gray August.   I'm enjoying zipping around on my bike (thanks Aunt Judy!) and pretending I am footloose.

Now for the role as "the farmer's wife" for the last 31 years, which really is a much bigger part of me than you see in the shop. I want to tell you how I really feel about September.  I LOVE it.  It is the end of the whirlwind season, the days are shorter which allows us to stop whatever we are doing by dark, so we are down to maybe twelve hour days now.  We are still busy making hay, doing some combining and planting cover crops as well as seed crops.  We just planted carrots and swiss chard for next years seed, which will also require irrigation to get it sprouted.  So there is still much to  do, but you can see the end in sight.

One thing you can think about the next time you buy an ear of corn, or a package of frozen beans or peas is that this veggie required a multitude of hours getting the field ready to plant, planting, irrigation, cultivation, more irrigation and harvesting.  This is a huge process that my family has undertaken for three generations, it is our way of life.  So eat your veggies all the while thinking about the work, care and pride that has gone into putting it on your table.

Now, moving on to the next part, grandma to be... girls are doing wonderful, and it is getting very exciting, days ticking away much faster than they realize.  There is no way to explain how their lives will be changing, but we all find out in our own way.  I still go back to holding my babies and coming to the realization of the power of love.  You always know that you are loved, but until you "hold your own" it is just one of those things you can't imagine.  So as soon as Expo is over I will start sewing for the nursery.

Now on to EXPO. Check it out on line http://www.nwquiltingexpo.com/ then make your plans to attend.  This is an amazing treat for quilters.  All quilting, all inspiration!  Of course we have gone into our own little frenzy of making new models, collecting new patterns, wondering where that fabric group that they promised was and, and, and...  It feels a bit like being a gerbil on a wheel, going fast but getting no where.  Then suddenly, it is here and we are done and it is wonderful.  Right now there are about four projects going at once in my little sewing room, seems I'm more productive that way.

And those of you who know me really well, it is time for me to start my annoying habit of telling you Christmas is coming.  You know that it can't all be accomplished in the short time that we have between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so it is time to start thinking about it.

This is my favorite time of the year.  I vow to savor every day with gratitude for for how far we have come this year and the joys that are ahead of us.

Here's comes August

Greetings,

Don't know where the time goes, but I do know it has been most
interesting and unique summer.  The store is packed with such amazing
new fabrics that it is really hard to know where to start.  We have
been enjoying visitors from all over the country.  We so enjoy
visiting with people finding out where they are from and what brings
them to Chehalis.

As many of you may know my husband and I are so thrilled to be
expecting grandbabies in the next few months as both of our girls are
pregnant.  Everyone tells me that grandchildren are the best, but my
daughters and son in laws are so wonderful it is hard to imagine
anything better than what we have right now.  Which brings me to tell
you that you may see some new faces around the shop in the coming
months, we are so happy to have Karen, Teri and Virginia ready to
help us out.  As you know, new faces, new smiles and new quilting
ideas are always a good thing.

On a more serious note, our family has a nephew who is battling
aplastic anemia and will  undergo a bone marrow transplant Aug 1
This brings me to encouraging everyone to donate blood.  There are
many ways to donate, you can give blood at any blood bank, you can
donate platelets and also be typed to be a bone marrow donor.  All of
this gifts are ways to help save lives.  You really never think it
will happen to someone in your life, but it can.  It is easy to get
busy and forget that we have the ability to help others in a very
profound way.

The farming is coming along, the peas will be harvested soon and the
beans are blooming nicely.  Corn is getting tall and so are the weeds
in my garden which I attack on a semi-daily basis.  Also have painted
my kitchen and made a new valance which makes it look like a brand
new room, love it.  Quilted a new throw for my bed and am trying to
spruce things up a bit.  It is a busy time of year and it is
certainly going quickly.

Speaking of time going quickly most of the holiday fabric is in the
shop now, watch our website for our upcoming "Christmas in August"
sale.  There are
new paper piecing shapes for more new project.  Lots of new patterns
for layer cakes and jelly rolls, so stop in and check them out.

Hope you are enjoying today, it is the most important day.

THE DAY AFTER

We just finished the 10th annual Western Washington Quilt Shop Hop and it was so wonderful to have so many smiling faces in the shop.  While I am tired this morning, I have to say that the stamina of the shop hoppers totally amazes me.  You were all wonderful!  Susan Hoover is the winner of our $500 gift basket we look forward to presenting that to her.

The shop is full of wonderful new fabrics that just make me want to sit and sew.  Maybe out on the deck now that we are finally getting some summer weather.  I love sitting in the warm sun out on the deck soaking up a "piece of quiet".

For those of you who don't know yet, I am working on a paper pieced honeycomb quilt that has become a total addiction.  It is accurate, fast and just so soothing.  Now I have never really been a long term project person, but this one will take me a while, and I am totally enjoying it.  Next time you are in the shop ask about the English Paper Piecing.  Everyone who works there has done this and we just love it.

Now if you don't know that I have another life, I am married to a wonderful guy who is a third generation farmer.  This year with the flooding things have been a bit of a challenge.  We were only able to farm about 50% of our fields, but we still consider our family to be very lucky.  My 81 year old momma's home flooded, as did our daughter and son in laws home, so it has been a very busy year for us.  Life on the farm is very busy this time of the year, but we love it.  The field that are planted with peas, corn, beets and beans are growing, the hay is getting tall, and the cows are laying peacefully out in the field.  This makes us feel like things will be normal around here again in time.

So I am taking today to find my house once again, there is a week of catching up to do, but believe me, there will be some quilting time as well.
Enjoy summer....
